Scrapbooking Hints

There's a ton of wonderful, different papers out there. For every photo, for every page, well, for every person, there is a patterned paper.

And as much as you love those patterned papers, it might seem tough to match your photo with just the right paper. Or you might be used to working with white paper as a background, using patterned paper only to embellish or mat photos.

"Won't patterned papers overwhelm my photos?" you might ask. Only if you let them! The Golden Rule of Patterned Papers says that matting your photos with a solid paper will provide a visual space between the photo and the background paper. Matting will make each photo "pop" off the page.

Patterned paper is a tool to enhance, not overwhelm, the most important part of your scrapbook: your photos. After all, the great part about patterned paper is finding just the right design to reinforce the theme of your photos. And there's something unifying about a patterned background paper, as it pulls together the page elements and presents a complete and easy-to-read theme.

So, whatever your scrapbooking background and personal style, we offer a few tried-and-true methods to picking patterned papers. Choose papers either:

Based on the Clothing Color in the Photo

Based on the Background Color in the Photo

Based on the Theme of the Photo

    To Evoke an Emotion

The really great thing about working with patterned papers is how many options are available to you. Imagine, for example, a baby photo. You can choose a soft pastel paper, or a sweet sun-and-moon pattern, or a pre-bordered teddy bear paper.

As you can see, there are few hard-and-fast rules about picking patterned papers. Experiment with potential patterned background papers, always slipping a coordinating solid paper underneath the photo to act as a mat. Then stand up and get a different perspective on your page.

And finally: Trust your instincts. What paper combination looks best to you? What appeals to your eye? If you think the paper is too bright or bold, give your photos a double or a wider mat. If the pattern is striped, trim your photo with patterned scissors to add variety. Experiment and let your personality touch every page you make.
